This is the Design Challenge featured in Volume 1 of Lettering Adventures, teaching students how to create their very own poster design in vintage Victorian lettering.
HIERARCHY & THUMBNAILS
Select which words you want to highlight in your phrase. Then draw out 5-10 small, rough thumbnails of some ideas on how to best highlight those keywords. This is your chance to play with different layouts and sizes until you discover the perfect concept for your project.
Now that you’ve selected a layout, you can try out different ways of styling and adding decorations to your letters. Victorian lettering is known for those tiny ornate details, so be sure to add elements like dots, filigree, and drop shadows for that wow factor.
REDRAW & REFINE
For easier placement, redraw your concept by first drawing the containers of your letters and then draw the skeleton of each word inside them. Only then should you begin to add weight and style to your piece. Then, refine your work and carefully ink your final sketch drawing.
